It was a different time... ... a different world
Life wasn't a mirror of Leave it to Beaver or Father Knows Best. Happy Days may have even been a mild stretch, but not by much. American Grafitti is probably a more accurate snapshot. Cruisin' Whittier Blvd, Drive-in movies, and Sock hops after the football game were the norm. It was a time much different than today.

Pioneer High School was an "open campus". No chain link fence keeping students in and uninvited visitors out. The walk to Washington and Broadway was short, and traveled by many at lunch time.

The fads were different, the dress was different, and a generation gap was developing between baby boomers and their folks as "rock 'n roll" swept the nation, soon to be joined by flower children and hippies.

Titan Town was a shell of a school that first year. A jumble of unfinished buildings surrounded by sawdust. Few lockers, no trees, no air conditioning, no stadium, no swimming pool. None of the amenities that would come in the ensuing years. With the world at the height of the Cold War, what there was allot of was air-raid drills and ducking under desks in-between lesson plans. There was also an abundance of pride and school spirit.
