Along with alumni, the Pioneer High School Administration and ASB continue exploring celebration plans. My understanding is that PHS initially planned on starting the celebration in 2008. Don't know why; perhaps a date miscommunication. Anyway, I'm told it has been corrected and the school is looking at an expanded celebration to start in 2009 and continue through 2011 (year of first graduating class). Their plan also includes having all available ASB Presidents and Homecoming Queens participate in a ceremony. No further information yet, on their plans, but it will surely be forthcoming as many Titan alumni work on-campus.

From an alumni perspective, our objective would be three-fold:
1. To assist PHS, in planning, however possible.
2. To be available for participation in whatever events PHS includes alumni.
3. To plan and execute alumni events (on and off campus) apart from PHS events. Any on-campus events would have to be approved by the PHS Administration.

Tasks:
Organize steering committee and planning committees for each class of alumni and historical data gathering. Ongoing.
Build an updated contact database of alumni.
Create ongoing updated website.
Celebration newsletter (online) to keep alumni informed of progress. Emailed to alumni quarterly.
Create a working list of ideas, to be discussed and reduced to definitive plans.
Create account for funds.
Create working budget.
Create a ticket package, including alumnus I.D.
Decide on a ticket price for alumni events, (in-total or individual events).
Create a 50 Years Memory Book and CD disc.
Organize alumni picnic(s).
Research ways to hold tailgate event during football game, for overflow crowd.
Plan dinner/dance(s).
Discuss "Homecoming Week" Open House with Admin/ASB.
Photographs collection.
Establish on-campus liaison(s) to collect historical data.
Internet connection to run live celebration video.
"In Memory of" list with photos (posters/slide show/included in memory book, etc.)
??

The above task list is preliminary and subject to editing. Please add your suggestion to Blogit!

Titan History Notes:
  • The Classes of 1961, 1962 and 1963 were the original classes at Pioneer (Sept. 1959). There were no Seniors.
  • The Class of 1961 entered Pioneer as Juniors and was the first graduating class.
  • Jack Jines (deceased) was the first Principal.
  • Jim Munson was the first ASB President.
  • The first homecoming was held in 1962. The Homecoming Queen was Carol Weddle. In 1960 and 1961 Football Celebration were held. Otila Valle was the first "Football Queen" (1960). Camille Nerio was Football Queen in 1961.
  • Mr. Lou Borg was Pioneer's first Head Varsity Football Coach. The Titans lost the first football game; a 0-26 defeat by Buena Park. In fact, Pioneer lost the first three games and rumors were circulating that a first year school couldn't compete with established teams. But the Titans didn't dispair, and came back to win four in a row and five of their last six games.
  • Mr Bob Braden coached the Titan Varsity Cross Country Team to the 1959 Suburban League Championship, giving Pioneer a memorible first year in athletics.
