Hello,
I am Hal Young from the class of 1967. We won the old Suburban League Baseball Championship in 1966 and 1967. Going into the CIF playoffs we were ranked #2 in the CIF Southern Section. Twenty years after we graduated in 1987, our old 67 team played the 1987 team and beat them 6-5. We are hoping to have a reunion in April at one of the Titan baseball games. If anybody knows who the current coach is, please contact me via email or phone 530 903 5153. As of the early 1990's, there had been only two head baseball coaches in the history of the school(Howard Pollack and Anthony Gonzales).
A LITTLE TRIVIA:Eight of the nine starters on the 67 baseball team went on to play college or pro baseball. One made it to the major leagues. An assistant coach at PiHi(Jerry Weinsten)coached Sacramento City College to three state championships and coached the US Olympic Baseball team to a Gold Medal. Three pitchers on the 67 team had one of the lowest combined ERA's in high school baseball history at 1.22.
Two of the players on the 67 team still play ball(Hal Young has played on three world championship hardball teams in the 40 and over division. Roy Houtekammer has played on several World Championship SoftballTeams, and recently was on a team that that won the Super-Open divison last year in Michigan. Dennis Saunders (class of 67) was a pitcher who threw the ball in the high 90's in high school. He pitched in his first major league game for the late great manager, Billy Martin of the Detroit Tigers. In his first American Legion game after high school graduation, he struck out 23 of the 27 batters he faced. Detroit signed him to a professional contract after the game at the Whittier High School baseball field. Saunders was only our #2 starter. Loyld Wilson was our #1 pitcher with an ERA under 1.00. One more thing, our only undefeated pitcher was Ed Thomas 5-0 (CIF Player of the Year-.472 batting average). Nine of the 15 players on the 67 team were all-league. We were pretty good. I still dream about that team!
