YEAR 1: 1959 -60


November 1959 - Coach Bob Braden's Varsity Cross Country team became the first to bring a League Championship to the School's athletic program as the Titan Harriers ran away with the Suburban League title. Led by Sophomore Ernie Gunderson and Freshman Dave Navarro Pioneer completed a 10-1 season enroute to the championship, including shutout victories over Duarte, La Mirada, St. Paul and Edgewood. Other team members leading the way to victory were: Bob Stevens (Jr), David Montez (Jr), Jess De La Luz (Jr), John Guerrero (Jr), and Sophomore Tom Galvan.


In another first for Pioneer, Titan Baseball standout and three time Varsity Letterman Pitcher, Bill Saunders, was selected as the CIF Player of The Year.




After coming close last year, losing to Japan's National Champion, Shigekatsu Haraikawa, Simi Valley Exchange student, in a close overtime match, Titan Grappler Dave Navarro won the 141 lb weight class handily, to bring the first CIF Gold to Pioneer High School in the school's short 3 plus year history. The win marked the third consecutive year that Navarro placed in CIF Wrestling, following the second place last year and fourth place in 1960. The Titans finished 4th overall in the team standings. Tom Ryan and Dan Navarro also brought back CIF medals.



CIF Gold came to Pioneer High School for the second consecutive year as Senior Dan Navarro win the 136 lb weight class at this years finals, capping off another great year for Titan Wrestlers. Coming off Suburban League, Cerritos Tourney and District Championship wins, Navarro led the Titans to another 4th place finish in CIF.




Under the guidance of Coach Pollack, the Titans Varsity Baseball team captured the Suburban League Championship for the second year in a row. Led by CIF MVP Ed Thomas, the team included: Robert Galindo, Roy Houtekamer, Gilbert Montenegro, Henry Rocha, Dennis Saunders, Mike Tinaza, Ed Thomas, Art valenzuela, Bob Warren, Lloyd Wilson and Hal Young.


Coached by Mr. Steve Kemp, the 1969-70 Cagers became the first Titan Varsity Basketball team to bring a Varsity Basketball League title to Pioneer as they swept through their Whitmont League opponents. Alex Terrazas, Earl Crawford and Jim Smith were voted to the All-Whitmont League First Team. Along the way the Titans also captured the Temple City Tourney and their first round CIF matchup against West Torrance.

In CIF playoffs the Titans won their first round game 78-77 against West Torrance before losing by a close score of 53-57 to Millikan.


The 1970-71 Basketball season proved to be victorious. Pioneer won the Whitmont League Title, along with La Serna and Montebello making it a Tri-Championship and moving the Titans on to CIF play for the second year in a row. Junior Garcia and Jim Smith were named to the All-Whitmont League. Smith was also named to All-CIF 2nd Team.


The Lady Titans Crosscountry team set out to sweep the Whitmont League. They did just that, with a 7-0 dual meet record followed by defeating all challengers at the League Meet by 30 points. The girls were led by Seniors Yvonne Hernandez, Captain; Jeanie Branham, co-captain; Adriana Dominguwz, Lori Kramer, Cynthia Lopez, and Juniors Debbie Lennon, Grace Leos, Susie Morales, and Sophomore Dawn Price. The gals were led by Coaches Julian De La Torre and Tommy Castro.






Lady Titan Harriers Go Back to Back. Led by Captain Cee DelToro, the 1980-81 Varsity Girl's Cross Country team posted their second undefeated Whitmont League record in two years to repeat as Champions.



Loretta Jordan captured the grueling 400 meter race in the CIF finals to become the first Lady Titan and the only Titan trackster, male or female, to win a CIF Gold medal in Track and Field.


Playing with intensity and ferocity, the Titan Soccer tean battled their way to the top, capturing the Whitmont League Championship. The well diciplined team will return most of their starters next year with a goal to win again and higher aspirations of bring home a CIF title.


The year was 1979. The game was Soccer. The goal was the ultimate acheivement envisioned by every California high school athlete... The C.I.F. Championship. This was to be the year of The Titans as Coach Mario Muniz' Soccer Team accented their second consecutive League Championship by breezing through C.I.F. 3A, defeating defending Champs, Calexico in the Semi-finals and outlasted Kennedy High School in the finals to be crowned C.I.F. Champions.

Round 1: Defeated Loyola 4-3
Round 2: Beat Walnut 5-2
Quarter: Shutout undefeated Alemany 2-0.
Semi-Finals: Beat defending Champs, Calexico 3-2.
Finals: Pioneer Titans 1 - Kennedy Irishmen 0

Titan Anthony Carrillo was named Most Valuable Soccer player in CIF-SS 3A, as well as All Whitmont League, All-League MVP for the second year, and All CIF 1st Team for the 2nd time. Coach Mario Muniz was voted 1979 Soccer Coach of the Year. Seven Titans were named to All Whitmont League and Five earned All CIF Honors.


Hard work, dedication and a 15 game win streak leads Coach Panagos' Varsity Lady Titans to Whitmont League Co-Championship and CIF playoffs. The gals advanced through two rounds, beating Rosemead and San Clamente before dropping a hard fought game to top seeded Gahr by one point. The Championship was the first for Lady Titans Basketball. Pat Garcia was named Whitmont League MVP. Terry Mitroff was also named to All-Whitmont First Team.

It's been a long wait. Eleven Years of running, passing catching, hitting the line hard. Well, the wait is over. The 1970 Titan's Varsity Football Team has broken the drought. They ran faster, threw further and hit harder, all the way to the top, bringing Pioneer its first Varsity Football League Championship. Dedication and hard work combined with the winning instructions of Coach Bob Spindola produced a glorious football season. Note: The Titans would come back to win Whitmont League again in 1971.

Following a 23 year drought, Wrestler Manuel Fregoso became the third Titan to bring a CIF Wresting Championship to Pioneer. Manuel won his title in the 2-A 138 lb weight division.


Cal Hi September 1960 Whittier, Ca. As a warmup to the upcoming Summer Olympics, in Rome, Italy, California High School was selected as the site of the Pre-Olympics Track meet. The event included such star athletes as John Thomas (High Jump); Ralph Boston (Long Jump); Rafer Johnson (Decathlon); Wilma Rudolph (100m,200m) and many more American and International Olympians.

As part of the program, an athlete from each high school in the district was selected to carry the Torch in an ongoing Marathon relay that would eventually take the torch to Rome. Selected to represent Pioneer High School was Titan Harrier, Dave Navarro, who carried the Torch through uptown Whittier on its way to the Condor stadium.




The old Whitmont League succumbed in 1993 and the WUHSD schools, joined by El Rancho became the Del Rio League. It would become a League dominated by Santa Fe, with 10 of 14 Championships to date. But, in 1998 the Pioneer Titans would interrupt that domination. It would be one of Pioneer's finest teams and they would not be stopped on their quest for the Del Rio League Crown.



Under the guidance of Coach Dick Berganthal, and led by Captains Tracy Mendoza and Jenny Linville, the 1992-93 Lady Titans Basketball hoopsters crowned a season of hard work with the Whitmont League Championship.
The Team: Jenny Linville, Lillian Marin, Nadya Filatoff, Tracy Mendoza, Maria Camacho, Dawn Woo, Christine Wong, Candida Hernandez, Kristen Tanimoto, M Godinez, Anabel Velasco. Popular teacher and Coach, Dick Berganthal graduated from Pioneer in 1963.
